How to Repair Holes in Plasterboard (Without Calling a Tradie)

Got a dent in your wall? Maybe a doorknob punched through, or you removed some old hardware and you're left with a hole. Don’t stress — repairing plasterboard is a job most people can handle with a bit of patience and the right products. Here’s a straightforward guide to help you patch up walls like a pro.

What You’ll Need

  • Utility knife
  • Sandpaper or sanding block
  • Siniat joint compound
  • Plasterboard offcut or patch kit (for large holes)
  • Jointing tape (mesh or paper)
  • Broadknife (100–150mm)

Small Holes (Under 50mm)

Perfect for things like screw holes or small dings.

  1. Sand the area lightly to remove paint or debris.
  2. Apply a small amount of joint compound over the hole using your broadknife.
  3. Feather the edges and let it dry.
  4. Sand smooth and apply a second coat if needed.
  5. Once dry, sand lightly again and it’s ready for paint.

Medium Holes (50mm to 150mm)

These might be caused by impacts or removed fixings.

  1. Cut around the damaged area to form a square or rectangle.
  2. Cut a plasterboard patch to match and secure it in place with backing timber or adhesive pads.
  3. Apply jointing tape around all edges.
  4. Apply joint compound over the patch and feather it out.
  5. Let it dry, sand smooth, then apply a second coat as needed.

Large Holes (150mm+)

Use this method for serious damage or accidental knocks.

  1. Cut out the damaged section and install new plasterboard fixed to wall studs or backing timber.
  2. Reinforce joins with joint tape.
  3. Apply joint compound in two or three coats, feathering further with each layer.
  4. Sand thoroughly between coats for a seamless finish.

Tips for a Professional Finish

  • Don’t overload your knife — apply in thin layers.
  • Always let each coat fully dry before sanding or recoating.
  • Prime patched areas before painting to avoid flashing.
