How to Cut and Install Plasterboard

How to Cut and Install Plasterboard

Installing plasterboard is one of the most important parts of interior construction — whether you're working on a new build, extension, or renovation. This step-by-step guide covers how to cut and install plasterboard like a pro using the right tools, techniques, and materials.

What You’ll Need

Step 1: Measure and Mark

Use a tape measure to determine the correct dimensions for your wall or ceiling area. Mark your measurements directly onto the plasterboard using a pencil and T-square.

Step 2: Cut the Plasterboard

Score the face of the plasterboard with a utility knife along your marked line. Snap the board along the scored line, then cut through the back paper. Use sandpaper to smooth any rough edges if necessary.

Step 3: Position the Board

Position the plasterboard against the wall or ceiling frame. Use a plasterboard lifter for ceilings to hold it in place safely. Make sure the cut edges align with studs or ceiling battens.

Step 4: Fix in Place

Secure the plasterboard with screws or nails, spaced approximately 200–300mm apart along studs and edges. Be careful not to break the surface of the board with the screw head.

Step 5: Join and Finish

Apply jointing compound to all joins and corners using a broad knife. Embed tape into the wet compound, then apply additional coats once dry, feathering out each layer. Lightly sand for a smooth finish.

Bonus Tips

  • Always store your plasterboard flat and off the ground to prevent warping.
  • Use moisture-resistant plasterboard in wet areas like bathrooms and laundries.
  • Check for fire-rated or acoustic requirements based on your build.
